Who We Are:

The Institute Calibration Laboratory is a section of the Institute Quality Systems department. We are supporting Institute R&D divisions, service departments, and commercial clients. The mission of the Institute Calibration Laboratory is to provide quality calibration and repair services of measuring and test equipment.

Objectives of this Role:
  • The purpose of this role is to support SWRI measurement and test equipment (M&TE) for all Divisions and departments. This is accomplished through the calibration of pressure, vacuum, flow, dimensional, torque, mass, temperature, humidity, electrical and frequency MT&E.
  • The calibration of SWRI M&TE provides accurate, repeatable, and traceable testing results for SWRI Divisions.
  • The calibration of SWRI M&TE provides traceability and proper documentation for the various SWRI quality programs to be accredited to international quality standards, such as ISO 17025 and ISO 9001.
Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:
  • Calibrate and adjust M&TE in one or more of the following disciplines - pressure, vacuum, flow, dimensional, torque, mass, temperature, humidity, electrical and frequency measurements to ensure compliance with published specifications. Train ICL staff in metrology concepts.
  • Calibrate and perform preventative maintenance on laboratory working standards and equipment.
  • Provide leadership and training to lower-level technical staff. Create and modify measurement uncertainty and Calibration and Measurement Capability budgets.
  • Participate in inter-laboratory comparisons, round robins and proficiency testing in both internal and external audits.
  • Perform "in-place" calibrations at locations within the Institute campus.
  • Develop procedures to calibrate highly complex measuring and testing instruments.
  • Collect, compile, summarize, record, and analyze data gathered during calibration to identify out-of-tolerance conditions and perform corrective action.
  • Complete documentation to support laboratory accreditation and traceability as required.
  • Provide assistance regarding metrology issues to scientific and engineering staff. Assist in both internal and external audits.
  • Perform "in-place" calibrations at locations within the Institute campus.
  • Perform laboratory housekeeping and administration.
Requirements:
  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Course work in metrology, electronics, physics, mathematics, or engineering is preferred. Related military experience highly desired.
  • Knowledge of mechanics, physics, electronics, general metrology, calibration systems, applied math/statistics is required.
  • 15-20 years: Calibration of mechanical, dimensional, thermodynamics, electrical, or frequency test equipment.
  • 15-20 years: Maintenance of mechanical or electronic systems.
  • 15-20 years: Training/certificates in metrology/calibration by military, state, national or accreditation body programs.
  • 10-15 years: Training junior technicians in metrology concepts and techniques.
  • A valid/clear driver's license is required.
