Georgia Power Growth and Natural Resources - Cultural Resources – Architectural Historian Position

Please Note; You will be required to be in the office at GPC Corporate HQ, 241 Ralph McGill Blvd, Atlanta, GA or in the field/on a client site a minimum of 4 days per week and/or as additionally required.

Job Summary:

  • This is a full-time Georgia Power position that collaborates with and supports the Company’s business units, including generation, construction, operations, and maintenance, in the consideration of cultural resources. Key duties include the identification of archaeological and historic architectural resources, development of strategies and solutions regarding these resources, and ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations. 
  • The position conducts background research to assist in project planning and development, provides oversight of consultant investigations to ensure quality work, performs limited field investigations, evaluates permitting needs, helps to develop best management practices for the Company’s cultural resource management, and ensures communication with all involved parties. 
  • In addition, the position involves coordination with state and federal agencies, Tribes, and other Stakeholders, and the selection and management of cultural resource consultants.
  • Level E4 - E6 

Job Requirements:

Georgia Power’s policy is 4-days in office, in the field, or at a customer location with 1-day work-from-home. In general, in-office/field days are Monday-Thursday. This position supports all Georgia Power’s business units; thus, office and WFH days may vary to meet business needs.

Education:

  • Collegiate level degree in Historic Preservation, Architectural History, or similar field, Graduate degree preferred;
  • Must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Qualification Standards 36 CFR Part 61 as an Architectural Historian

Experience:

  • Minimum of 4-years’ professional experience, preferably within Georgia, in Architectural History, History, or Historic Preservation;
  • Experience conducting background research and writing cultural resources reports; 
  • Demonstrated documentation and research experience, including National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility determinations and effects assessments, and architectural surveys; 
  • Familiar with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 Consultation Process; 
  • Experience with cultural resources photography and mapping for basic geographic information system (GIS) and data collection.
  • Experience with Historic American Building Survey (HABS)/Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) and Permanent Archival Record (PAR) documentation
  • Experience with Federal Energy Regulation Commission (FERC) and/or Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), is a plus

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Georgia’s architectural styles and typologies;
  • Strong project management skills;
  • Ability to qualify as an expert witness to support Georgia’s Title 22 regulations (Eminent Domain);
  • Ability to conduct on-site field reviews, site assessments, and architectural surveys;
  • Familiarity with drafting proposals and budgeting of projects;
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS
  • Familiarity with linear utility projects, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Section 404 permitting requirements, landscape design, and deed and property research, is a plus.

Major Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide information, guidance, assistance to permitting coordination, and cost-effective compliance assistance to Georgia Power business units for due diligence and Section 106 projects, as well as stewardship initiatives; 
  • Understand GPC core business unit needs and processes; work with diverse teams to avoid cultural resource impacts where practical and provide appropriate cultural resource support; 
  • Negotiate and resolve cultural resource issues with state or federal agencies, including U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, Georgia State Historic Preservation Office, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, and Georgia Department of Transportation;  
  • Demonstrate behaviors consistent with Safety First, Intentional Inclusions, Act with Integrity, and Superior Performance 
  • Produce high quality work in an efficient manner, demonstrating initiative, personal responsibility, building internal and external relationships;  
  • Review and comment on proposed regulatory changes to reduce impact to GPC's business units;  
  • Communicate technical issues effectively to customers, agencies and management;  
  • Promote and support the Company’s management of cultural resources, including regulatory, due diligence, and stewardship in all areas of business and external engagement;  
  • Actively support the Company’s storm restoration and emergency response efforts.  

This position has been identified as a role that will require the use of a Georgia Power fleet vehicle.  The following will be required if you are selected for this position:

  • Must have at least one year of verifiable driving experience (Must hold a valid driver’s license for the class vehicle to be operated. Driving permits are not typically considered a valid driver’s license). 
  • Must have no revocation of driving privileges within the 36 months prior to application, no convictions of major traffic violations (DUI, hit and run, reckless driving, etc.) within the 12 months prior to application, or any pending charges for a major traffic violation at the time of application.
  • Must consent to a continuous monitoring of your Motor Vehicle Record
