Data Modeler - Data Engineering - Remote
At CSAA, we are on a mission to strategically accelerate our competitive advantage by delivering and operating best-in-class data platforms and data lakes. Our company culture is built on innovation, collaboration, and a relentless focus on customer satisfaction. We leverage data for cutting-edge insights and decision-making, ensuring that every byte of information is transformed into actionable intelligence. Join us to be part of a dynamic team that is shaping the future of data engineering and analytics, and to work on projects that have a direct impact on our business and customers.
Your Role:
We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Data Architect (Level 3) to lead the design and evolution of our enterprise data ecosystem. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for architecting robust, scalable, and secure solutions that effectively manage, process, and derive insights from both structured and unstructured data assets. You will shape our data strategy, driving innovation and enabling data-driven decision-making across the organization. This position demands a deep understanding of diverse data technologies, architectural patterns, and best practices, coupled with the ability to lead complex projects, mentor junior team members, and bridge the gap between business needs and technical solutions for all data types.
Your work:
Enterprise Data Architecture Design & Strategy:
• Lead the design and development of comprehensive enterprise data architectures, encompassing traditional data warehousing, modern data lakes, data marts, OLTP/OLAP systems, real-time data streaming, specialized repositories for unstructured data (e.g., document stores, object storage) and Graph DB's.
• Define architectural standards, principles, and best practices for managing the full lifecycle of both structured (e.g., relational databases, tabular data) and unstructured data (e.g., text, images, audio, video, logs).
• Develop and maintain data architectural roadmaps, aligning them with overall business and IT strategies, and proactively identifying opportunities to leverage new data types.
• Evaluate and recommend cutting-edge data technologies, tools, and platforms, specifically considering their capabilities for handling varying data formats, volumes, and velocities.
• Ensure data architectures are scalable, reliable, secure, and performant across all data types and sources.
Structured & Unstructured Data Management & Implementation:
• Oversee the design and implementation of conceptual, logical, and physical data models for structured data, ensuring optimal organization and query performance.
• Architect solutions for ingesting, transforming, and storing massive volumes of unstructured and semi-structured data, leveraging technologies like object storage, NoSQL databases, and distributed file systems.
• Design and implement robust ETL/ELT pipelines for structured data, and sophisticated data processing frameworks (e.g., Spark) for extracting insights from unstructured data.
• Work closely with data engineers, data scientists, software developers, and business stakeholders to translate diverse business requirements into technical data solutions for both data paradigms.
• Implement data profiling, quality assessments, and robust data governance strategies that account for the unique challenges of structured and unstructured data, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and compliance.
• Design and optimize data access patterns, including APIs and specialized query interfaces, to enable efficient consumption of all data types by downstream applications and analytical tools.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex data architectural and data processing issues across heterogeneous data landscapes.
Technical Leadership & Innovation:
• Provide technical leadership and guidance on complex data initiatives, from ideation to production deployment, particularly those involving advanced analytics on unstructured datasets.
• Drive the adoption of best practices for data modeling, data integration, and data processing, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
• Mentor and provide technical leadership to junior data architects and data engineers, enhancing their skills in both traditional and big data domains.
• Communicate complex technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences, including explaining the nuances of managing different data formats.
Data Governance, Security & Compliance:
• Establish and enforce comprehensive data security measures and access controls across all structured and unstructured data repositories.
• Ensure strict adherence to data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA) and internal security policies for all data assets, understanding the specific considerations for unstructured data.
• Define and implement data lineage and metadata management strategies to provide transparency and traceability for both structured and unstructured data flows.
Required Experience
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• 5 to 8+ years of progressive experience in data architecture, data engineering, or a related role, with at least 3-5 years in a lead or senior architect capacity.
• Extensive hands-on experience designing, implementing, and optimizing data solutions for both highly structured and voluminous unstructured data.
• Proven experience leading complex enterprise-level data initiatives from conception to delivery.
• Demonstrated expertise with NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra, DynamoDB, Neo4j) and their application for unstructured or semi-structured data.
• Deep understanding and hands-on experience with major cloud data platforms (e.g., AWS Redshift/S3/Glue/Lake Formation, Azure Data Lake/Synapse/Databricks, Google BigQuery/Cloud Storage/Dataflow), specifically utilizing their capabilities for diverse data types.
• Extensive experience with data warehousing concepts, dimensional modeling, and ETL/ELT tools (e.g., Talend, Informatica, DataStage, Apache NiFi, DBT).
• Strong programming skills in at least one relevant language (e.g., Python, Java, Scala), with experience in data manipulation and API development.
• Experience with text analytics, natural language processing (NLP), or image/video processing techniques is a significant plus.
• Familiarity with data governance tools and frameworks, including those for managing metadata for unstructured assets.
• Knowledge of various data serialization formats (e.g., Parquet, ORC, JSON, Avro) and their optimization.
• Expert-level proficiency in relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL) and a strong command of SQL.
What would make us excited about you?
• Certifications in cloud data platforms focused on big data or data analytics.
• Experience with data cataloging and metadata management solutions specifically for unstructured data.
• Knowledge of machine learning pipelines and MLOps, particularly as applied to unstructured data.
• Experience in designing architectures for real-time analytics and stream processing of varied data formats.
• Familiarity with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and microservices architectures in a data context.
• Experience in one of CSAA IG's business lines a plus
• Fulfills business needs, which may include investing extra time, helping other teams, etc.
• Travels as needed for role, including divisional / team meetings and other in-person meetings.
• Actively shapes our company culture (e.g., participating in employee resource groups, volunteering, etc.)
• Lives into cultural norms (e.g., willing to have cameras when it matters: helping onboard new team members, building relationships, etc.)
