The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) is a not-for-profit international regulatory authority whose mission is to assure the effective and efficient reduction of risks to the reliability and security of the grid. NERC develops and enforces Reliability Standards; annually assesses seasonal and long‐term reliability; monitors the bulk power system through system awareness; and educates, trains, and certifies industry personnel. NERC’s area of responsibility spans the continental United States, Canada, and the northern portion of Baja California, Mexico. NERC is the Electric Reliability Organization (ERO) for North America, subject to oversight by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and provincial authorities in Canada. NERC’s jurisdiction includes users, owners, and operators of the bulk power system, which serves nearly 400 million people.

Your Impact

The Standards Development Analyst reports to the Director of Standards Development and serves as a critical technical partner to Standard Developers while supporting multiple projects. The Standards Development Analyst ensures the technical excellence and completeness of project documentation with supporting compliance, engineering, and cybersecurity information.

Your Role

Support multiple, concurrent standard development projects and activities including:

  • Partner with multiple Standards Developers to develop NERC Reliability Standards project supporting documentation.
  • Support the development of high-quality technical documentation including, but not limited to: technical rationales, Violation Risk Factors/Violation Severity Level justifications, responses to FERC directives, and supplemental materials.
  • Ensure documentation is thoroughly scrutinized through a compliance, engineering, and cybersecurity lens.
  • Participate in technical workshops, quality reviews, comment response efforts, and other supporting tasks as needed.
  • Draft summaries, stakeholder communications, and detailed technical reports to support Standards Authorization Requests (SARs) and development milestones.
  • Assist in designing and executing field tests.
  • Assist in the development of presentations, briefings, seminars, news articles, and workshops.
  • Support the analysis of technical data from entities, tests, and field implementations to validate feasibility and identify risks or improvement areas.
  • Contribute to statistical summaries and visualization of key reliability or performance metrics, using data analysis and visualization software packages.
  • Stay up-to-date with Compliance and Engineering guidance documents.
  • Collaborate with compliance, security, planning, operations, and enforcement subject matter experts to integrate practical insights into standard development.
  • Facilitate solution-oriented dialogue across internal departments and external stakeholders.
  • Provide technical briefings to internal staff, drafting teams, or industry working groups as needed.
  • Understand current Standards Department and Standards Information Team processes.
  • Foster an inclusive and collaborative work environment. 
  • Foster relationships within the company, the ERO Enterprise, stakeholders and policymakers. 
  • Be familiar with and adhere to NERC information technology security practices. 
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have at a minimum:

  •  A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university, or equivalent experience.
  • Engineer with a minimum of 10 years’ experience in the electric power industry and/or a J.D. licensed to practice law in at least one state with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in the electric power industry drafting policy, regulation, legislation or other guidance material.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal direct supervision.
  • Ability to manage priorities in order to meet set milestones and deadlines.
  • Competence in interpersonal communications, with the ability to interact with people from many levels of industry.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office tools such as Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, and TEAMS.
  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly.

Preferred candidates will also have:

Experience in one or more of the following fields:

  • Project Management
  • Requirements Gathering
  • Legal

The following attributes are desirable, but are not required for consideration:

  • Familiarity with the application of NERC standards.
  • Working knowledge of NERC’s standards process.
  • One or more certifications from the Project Management Institute.

  • A background check will be conducted prior to employment.
  • In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification document form upon hire.
  • This position has been classified as exempt.
  • The position may be based remotely but must be able to travel to NERC offices if needed. Reimbursement of travel expenses will be in accordance with the company’s travel and expense reimbursement policies.
  • Travel is necessary several times a year.
