Full Job Description
The Chesapeake Fire Department is hiring a detail-oriented, self-motivated, and customer-focused Payroll/HR professional to support our dynamic team. If you thrive in a fast-paced environment and enjoy making a meaningful impact behind the scenes, this opportunity is for you!

What You'll Do:
- Process payroll for ~500 sworn personnel and non-sworn full-time/part-time staff
- Coordinate onboarding for new hires - up to 60 at a time!
- Prepare and manage new hire documents, personnel action forms, terminations, and personnel files
- Provide clear guidance on payroll and HR policies
- Monitor:
- Workers' compensation pay
- FMLA absences
- Military and short-term disability pay
- Resolve payroll inquiries related to paychecks, benefits, and deductions
- Analyze and ensure accurate timecard entries
- Generate audit and statistical reports for leadership and supervisors
- Collaborate with Officers and other departments to ensure timely and accurate processing
What We're Looking For:
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills
- Ability to follow instructions, meet deadlines, and work independently
- Comfortable working weekends as needed (flex time available)
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Experience with public safety or 207(k) exempt employees is a plus!
