Position Description:

This internship is designed to provide STEM students - in their trade program or undergraduate years with experience working with the Monterey Bay Aquarium's electrical team, which includes working on existing electrical systems, assisting with builds of new systems, and assisting the controls automation team where relevant. Additionally, the program seeks to increase diversity of scientists involved in conservation science.

Interns will assist electrical staff with daily rounds, new system builds, new wiring, mechanical equipment repairs, and participate in safety training, as required. They will also observe & assist other staff, including controls automation engineers, mechanical & plumbing craftsmen, life support operators, and data managers, to facilitate a better understanding of these aspects of facilities operations and engineering at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The intern is required to design, implement, and present a final project pertinent to the Aquarium at the end of the internship.

The work environment includes, but is not limited to, behind the scenes areas and office time. It may include work in wet, slippery areas, hot and humid areas, variable temperatures, and variable weather conditions. Locations may also vary between Monterey Bay Aquarium and off-site facilities.

Eligibility:

Successful applicants should be:

  • Currently enrolled in a relevant trade program or undergraduate program or within one year post-graduation
  • In good academic standing
  • Must be able to work safely in an environment utilizing handheld tools, personal protective equipment (PPE), climbing stairs and ladders, and working with fine instruments or pieces such as wires
  • Education or experience in electrical trades, electrical engineering, HVAC training or schooling, and mechanical engineering preferred

Internship Dates and Pay Rate:

The Electrical Internship is offered in the summer through fall of 2025 for up to 480 hours. Interns may choose either one 8-hour day (preferred) or 2 4 or 8 hour days per week. Monday - Friday options for schedules. 8:00am start time preferred.

Internship is paid at $18/hour

  • Students will be notified of their acceptance into the program by May 31, 2025
