Job Summary

The Clinical Nursing Director (CND) will plan and manage the clinical and administrative operations of the assigned unit within Brandon Newborn Intensive Care, located within C.S. Mott Children's Hospital. Brandon NICU is a Level IV NICU, which is one of the state's leading referral centers for premature newborns and infants with complex medical problems such as congenital heart disease, complex surgical problems, or unusual anomalies needing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), high-frequency ventilation, nitric oxide therapy, and whole-body cooling for hypothermic neuroprotection.

Responsibilities*

  • Develop and implement unit goals and objectives, including establishing patient care practice standards consistent with national professional and regulatory guidelines.
  • Integrate unit goals and objectives with Nursing Service goals and objectives. Advise and assist with establishing priorities and institutional program development.
  • Work closely with the Brandon NICU MPLAN Medical Provider, Clinical Nurse Specialist, staff, and other disciplines to implement patient, unit, and institutional objectives successfully. Partner with Brandon NICU MPLAN leadership in resolving interdisciplinary operating problems.
  • Supervise operations of the assigned unit within Brandon NICU. Establish minimum/maximum staffing patterns to ensure quality patient care. Initiate and implement a staffing schedule consistent with care requirements and respond to varying patient activity and acuity.
  • Identify and recommend specific staffing needs and position qualifications consistent with unit objectives and patient case mix.
  • Interview and select qualified personnel.
  • Evaluate the performance of nursing staff responsible for the unit patient care.  Make recommendations for merit awards and personnel classification changes. Counsel and discipline nursing staff to achieve unit and institutional objectives related to high-quality patient care.
  • Interpret and implement university and hospital personnel policies and programs and ensure their uniform and correct application.
  • Project and monitor personnel budget for the patient care unit. Provide information regarding budget variances to the Associate Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO). 
  • Collaborate and coordinate with other disciplines to plan, evaluate, and implement the commodity budget for the patient care unit.
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Nurse Specialist to initiate and implement unit-level orientation and staff development guidelines. Encourage and provide opportunities for continuing education of the nursing staff.
  • Initiate, plan, analyze, and participate in Nursing staff development programs and workshops.
  • In partnership with MPLAN leadership (CND, CNS, Medical Provider), participate in concurrent and retrospective evaluation of patient care consistent with the hospital quality improvement program. Through this review process, changes and improvements in areas affecting the quality of patient care are evaluated and recommended, keeping with regulatory standards.
  • Establish guidelines with the nursing faculty that support the institutional goal of providing the primary clinical environment for nursing students. Facilitate, coordinate, and monitor the clinical experience of nursing and other students.
  • Initiate and cooperate in applied research in health care in keeping with the institutional objectives of maintaining prominence in developing new modes of evidenced-based clinical practice.
  • Formulate personal and professional goals and prepare written annual self-evaluation for the ACNO. 
  • Utilize leadership and management skills, including personnel management and the ability to perform as a role model for nursing staff.
  • Utilize excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Collaborate with MPLAN leadership in a manner that fosters team building and provides visionary direction for team members.  
  • Work effectively with MPLAN leaders, administrators, physicians, peers, and subordinates.  
  • Utilize the change management process. 
  • Implement initiatives that positively impact patient care.

Reporting Relationship: 
The 8W Brandon NICU Clinical Nursing Director reports to the Associate Chief Nursing Officer for C.S. Mott Children's Hospital.
